Sticker Walls

I'm finally getting around to decorating the girls' room. It's not a huge space - about 12x15. Just enough room for two twin beds with a dresser in between. The other side of the room has a big toy box (you can see it peeking out here) and a tall dresser to the right and a closet area, play table and bookshelves to the left. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/album%202/IMG_9916.jpg" /></div><br />Obviously there will be new bedding and the rug will probably be moved to our bedroom. I'm also going to reupholster the headboards and add canopies, which will help with the funky wall situation (these old loft walls are quirky and I love them). <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/album%202/IMG_9918.jpg" /></div><br />But the temporary walls to the right and left of the beds, which we added when we moved in, need something fun. The background needs to stay white so it won't look too off from the loft walls (which I don't want to paint at all). I couldn't put my finger on it, but I wanted something sort of loose and juvenile - almost like the girls did it themselves. <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2010/10/sharpie-wallpaper.html">I considered</a> doing something like this with sharpies, which I still really like: <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/album%202/LONNYLisaFinesaptPicture10.png" /></div><br />I also thought about stenciling a cute bow pattern, but I didn't get around to any of those projects. Then one day a couple months ago <a href="http://twitter.com/#%21/jennykomenda">I tweeted</a> about how my girls were sneakily decorating their walls with stickers. (that period is supposed be a comma btw. Fingers were tired from peeling I guess) :) <br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><img src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/album%202/Picture44-1.png" /><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Soon after a friend emailed me a link to <a href="http://www.paytonturner.com/">this amazing girl's site</a>. Her name is Payton Turner and she is only 25. Look at the gorgeous wallpaper this girl makes. I instantly wanted it for my girls room. You will flip out like I did when you put two and two together here. This "wallpaper" is actually made up of hundreds of different stickers!!! I think it is so cool with it's traditional design references but also so modern and kitsch. My idea was to wallpaper just the temporary walls with white contact paper maybe? and then do the sticker patterns and then paint a coat of Polycrylic over the top to keep little hands from messing with all my hard work! The contact paper approach should make it easy to remove the pattern when we move. <br /><br />I can't wait to share how it goes. Obviously mine will be A LOT more amateur, but I think it will be a fun project. And if after a couple hours it feels like it isn't going to work, I won't be out more than a couple bucks. <br /><br />PS Payton was featured in Elle Decor this month. Page 74! Thinking about sofas...

Isn't it crazy how so many of us still lament the loss of Domino? That was good stuff. <br /><br />Remember Rita Konig? She had a really great column in Domino and seemed so cool and chic. Did you know <a href="http://online.wsj.com/search/term.html?KEYWORDS=RITA+KONIG&bylinesearch=true">she writes</a> for the Wall Street Journal? And she used to write for the New York Times. While she was there she did this little <a href="http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/28/inside-out-reinventing-a-sofa/">post about reupholstering her antique sofa</a>. Here's the before shot (btw can you even handle how pretty the frame of this sofa is!?): <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/album%202/0727rita2.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">And the after: </div><img src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/album%202/0727rita.jpg" /><br /><br /></div>She picked a really cool pattern from Quadrille. I'm wondering how much she still loves this sofa after a few years of seeing the pattern day in, day out? There are probably only a handful of fabric patterns out there that I would be okay with that situation. <br /><br />Anyway, when she had her sofa recovered, she had the cushions filled with down. Not foam wrapped in down, like so many of us have, but full on down-filled cushions. I've never used that for clients, but I once had an old chair that had a down-filled cushion. It was so comfortable, but I found that I was fluffing the cushion all the time! <br /><br />I'd love the hear any input you readers might have. I'm going sofa shopping with a client this week so this is a little bit of market research. Anyone with down-filled cushions want to put their two cents in? Do they get smashed all the time? Does that drive you nuts?? Help Wanted: Expanding the Team!

I have some exciting news - I am looking for one or two new interns to add to the Jenny Komenda Interiors/LGN team! <br /><br />There are some really, seriously exciting things happening right now. I've been so grateful for the ad hoc group of helpers I've had this year and I'm sad to be losing some who are going away to school. 2012 is going to be a big year, and I'm hoping to find an intern or two who wants to stick it out with me for a few months this fall. The intern positions are unpaid in the beginning, but I'm expecting to be able to take on some full time employees around the new year. There will be lots of perks in the meantime, I promise! <br /><br />**If you've already emailed me in the past year or so about interning, please feel free to email me again. Thanks!** <br /><br />Here is my ideal candidate (<span style="font-style: italic;">and I expect to be pretty firm on all of these</span>): <br />1. Lives in NYC and knows how to get around the city by themselves. (Bonus points for smart phone users. I <3 google maps.) <br />2. Hours: 9 am - 3 pm, <span style="font-weight: bold;">but most importantly 12-3 pm</span>. Days can be flexible, but I'm hoping for at least three days a week, if not five. <br />3. Comfortable with computers and general office technology. MAJOR points if you're already a blogger or know HTML. <br />4. A deep love of interior design. DIY Abstract Art

Some of you asked for more information on my friend Vanessa's front room. Fortunately for Vanessa (but unfortunately for you), she thrifted her gorgeous sofas. The gray one was reupholstered and the orange loveseat was in perfect condition (she paid $20 for it!!). She did add the legs though. The chevron pillows were made from fabric purchased at Creative Fabrics in Arizona. There is a cow hide on the floor that she got at Home Goods for $200. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/album%202/newhouse3.jpg" /></div><br />I especially love the abstract art. Vanessa bought a huge square canvas on sale for $40 at Michaels and used her son's oil painting kit to do her own version of this <a href="http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/287/21/2753.full">Franz Kline painting</a>.
